British or Austrian Arts & Crafts Mahogany Armchair

Unavailable
This extraordinary mahogany armchair with brass inlay dates from circa 1900 and is believed to be of British or Austrian origin. It measures 40.75" high, 20.5" wide and 19.5" deep. Seat measures 17" by 17" and the seat height is 16". The use of vertical slats on the sides is reminiscient of chairs and tables from the Jugenstil and Vienna Secession period, including works by Marcel Kammerer from around 1900 to 1905 and produced by J&J Kohn, Thonet and Otto Wagner. Another designer, Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867-1908), also employed vertical slats in similar ways too. The chair is also similar to the understated Art Nouveau period designs by George Montegue Ellwood which were produced for J.S. Henry. Their chairs often employed metal inlay similar to this chair. Condition is very good. The chair is structurally sound and the patina is old. The surface has layers of built-up wax/polish and a thorough, gentle cleaning will better reveal the mahogany grain and inlay. T are noticeable but light water stains on the seat and some scuffs of white house paint on the rear of the seat back. This chair will look stunning after it is cleaned and newly polished.
