British Brightwell Pre-Raphaelite Portrait Oil Painting

Unavailable
This exceptional oil on canvas depicting a guitar-playing boy in Renaissance attire is signed " G Brightwell" and dated " 189_ " (Last digit is not legible.) Stretcher measures 20" by 24", and the frame measures 27 5/8" by 31 1/2" by 2 3/4". Weight is an estimated 10-14 lbs. The gilded frame dates from the period of the painting, or the early twentieth century, and is in very good condition. It has some chips at the corners and its brass nameplate reads simply "G. Brightwell". There are three old professional repairs to the canvas, and some inpainting at these repairs. The canvas has a layer of clean varnish which we estimate was applied at some point in the past thirty years or so, and the painting may have been professionally cleaned prior to varnishing. Please inspect our images carefully. According to the "Dictionary of British Artists (1880-1940)", Brightwell was a painter in London who exhibited from 1881 to 1901. We know nothing more about this painter. This work exhibits the finest characteristics of the Romanticism and Realism periods. The attention to detail is extraordinary and the painting has a three-dimensional quality. In particular, the boy's skin tone, his velvet attire and the hanging tapestry in the background all appear life-like. The entertainer's gaze and smile is filled with joy. He is wearing a ruby red velvet robe with the Maltese cross across the chest. This item resides in our client's gallery in Westchester County NY and may be seen by appointment.
