Pill silverers were used throughout the 18th and to the mid 19th centuries to coat pills with silver or gold. The pill was coated with a kind of syrup, placed inside the globe filled with silver or gold leaf, and shaken and spun until coated. This pill silverer has a crack in the top hemisphere.
