The Bobo number 130,000 living in eastern Burkina Faso, and southern Mali. They are primarily farmers with crops of sorghum, millet, yams, and maize, as well as cash crops of cotton and peanuts. The use of ceremonial masks revolves around the balance of nature, fertility, rain, and harvest. Many of their masks show a regional similarity to the Bwa to their north in Mali and the large Mossi tribe to their south and west in Burkina Faso with polychrome, geometric designs sometimes with large plank superstructures and often zoomorphic forms such as this bird headdress which would have been worn on top of the head with raffia and fabric hanging down around the dancer.
