This is a Victorian Bleeding cup in Excellent condition. Medicinal bleeding used to be a common practice and was used to purify the blood. Once a lancet or scarificator was used cut a cup was used to catch the blood often in conjunction with some sort of suction. Both wet and dry methods were used. For the dry method a candle or some other source of heat would be used to heat the cup which would then be placed on the skin and the suction caused as the cup cooled would engorge that area with supposedly bad blood. Each of these cups are hand blown and shaped so each is unique. Average height is around 2 and the average diameter is 2 ¼. These make a great addition to any collection of Civil War or Victorian medical collectibles.
