The Bijago ( Bijogo ) tribe resides in the islands off the coast of Guinia-Bissau and are primarily rice and palm oil farmers or fishermen. This wonderful colonial period carving is remeniscent of Southern United States black folkart. The man with dog in a pork-pie hat would be at home in tne American South as well as West Africa.
