The ancient Benin kingdom was founded in the early 14th century. The Benin resided in the forest area of southwestern Nigeria. The art of lost wax bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280 and reached its peak in the 15th and 16th centuries. Fabulous bronze castings from this period and later have resided in the museums of Europe since the late 19th century. Throuout their history the Benin have maintained skilled bronze work as a primary art form. This bronze figure is of the royal horn blower and stands 15 inches tall. Without the detail on the armor and clothing of the earlier pieces I would certainly put this in the 20th century, but a very nice bronze in any case.
