Austrian Bronze Waiter Sculpture, Josef Engelhart c1900
Description: Antique Bronze Sculpture of a Waiter (Kellner) by Josef Engelhart (Austrian, 1864-1941), Early 20th C. Austria. The sculpture is modeled in the form of a male figure carrying four plates of food (three on one arm) and standing on a mound base. The bronze features a dark finish with light verdigris patina. The surface of the base is inscribed: "Engelhart 1904". The back edge of the base is stamped with square mark, "63" and "ÖSTERR. GESELLSCH. Z. FÖRDERUNG D. MEDAILLENKUNST UND KLEINPLASTIK". Josef Engelhart was born in Vienna, Austria on August 19, 1864. He was a painter and sculptor who studied at the art academies in Vienna and Munich. He traveled to Spain and Italy and spent a considerable amount of time in Paris. Engelhart died in Vienna, December 19, 1941. Engelhart was a co-founder of the Vienna Secession, an avant-garde group of artists who broke away from the official art academies. Engelhart was included in an exhibit catalog featuring Secession works in 1909. Engelhart was known for painting scenes and characters drawn from Viennese everyday life. Well-known sculptures which he created are the Waldmüller monument and the Borromäus fountain, both in Vienna. Engelharts autobiography was published in 1943 (two years after his death).
