The decoration on this Imperial Russian silver cigarette box represents the very finest engraving available in the Art Nouveau style. The front cover is decorated with a winged creature that appears to be a cross between a dragonfly and a swallowtail butterfly. The front is also monogrammed "VM" and "SZh" (transliterated) along with a few other words in Cyrillic. The back cover is engraved with a Cyrillic presentation text, dated 1911 (reign of Nicholas II). The thumbpiece is set with a blue cabochon faux sapphire. The inside of the box is marked with the kokoshnik used in the Moscow area, and with the maker's mark "VYu".

Origin: Moscow, Russia, 1911. Condition: very good, normal light wear appropriate to age, a 1/4" split on the back at the edge of the cutout for the thumbpiece. Size: 4-1/8" x 3-1/8" x 1/2".
