The crest as engraved upon this Pair of Victorian English Sterling Silver Candlesticks by James Dixon & Sons hallmarked Sheffield 1895 is that of the family of Barham. It may be blazoned as follows:
Crest: A stork among bulrushes all proper
Motto: Fortis et patiens [Strong and patient]
This crest belongs to the ancient Sussex family of Barham who held land at Wadhurst in the Manor of Bivelham in the mid-15th Century. At that time the family name was spelt 'Berham' and was so spelt for many generations until the mid to late 16th Century when the current spelling of 'Barham' came into use. The crest along with their arms (Argent on a fess gules between three bears passant sable muzzled gules a fleur-de-lys between two martlets all gules) and pedigree was recorded by Nicholas Berham at the Heralds' Visitation of Kent in 1574, and confirmed to Sir George Barham in 1910 although the family had been using them for several hundred years. Sir George Barham (born 22nd November 1836), of Snape, near Wadhurst was a Justice of the Peace for the Counties of Middlesex and Sussex. He was knighted in 1904 and served as both the Mayor of Hampstead (1905-06) and the High Sheriff of Middlesex (1907-08). He died on the 16th November 1913. Sir George's youngest
surviving son, Arthur Saxby Barham lived on his estate at Hole Park, Rolvenden,
There is an example of the Arms of Sir George Barham near to Belsize Park, London with his crest of 'A stork among bulrushes all proper' and motto 'Fortis et patiens'.
