"Venetian Capriccio" by James Salt (1850-1903). This beautiful oil on canvas captures the most painted city in the history of art - Venice.
Painted in a manner which resembles the school of Canaletto.
The painting delightfully presents the city with its buildings on water and a few gondolas. In the background the sky is slightly overcast which might indicate that the storm was just about to start.
The artist used very delicate pastel colours to add some mystery to the scenery with some vivid turquoise and slightly golden beige.
The painting shines through out with the help of proper lighting.
Provenance: This particular piece came from the private collection of a stately home which was proudly displayed in the library.
