ANTIQUE NUN Locket NURSE Cut Steel BELT

Unavailable
The term 'chatelaine' dates from the nineteenth century. It usually refers to a set of short chains hung from the belt that might hold a variety of items for daily use, such as keys and watches. This fabulous old ornate belt has the loop for the chatelaine chains and it still has a nuns locket with hinged photos inside. I think it is cut steel or silver over brass. It is blackened (inside is still silver in color) it is hard to tell without cleaning it. It is entirely cut and faceted. At first glance, the sparkle will have you thinking it is set with hundreds of marcasites but that's the illusion of the many facets. This has ornate faceted links all the way around. It measures 28” long ) 26” wearable) and is 2 ¾” at its widest. The locket has a hinged clasp with religious pictures inside. It probably had more hanging from the chatelaine loop at one time.
