Antique Musicians Gouache Painting by C.P. Slocombe R.A.

Unavailable
This exceptional, large, framed gouache depicting two traveling musicians is attributed to the Royal Academy member, Charles Philip Slocombe (1832-1895). The subjects appear to be Italian or eastern European. Slocombe was a British painter who is said to have exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1850 to 1882, and whose works were published in "The Etcher". This work resides under glass in an ornate, giltwood frame from the period of the painting. The original nameplate reads "C.P. SLOCOMBE", and we have found no signature on the work. This painting was not been examined out of its frame and is being sold "as-is". The frame measures 42.75 by 34 inches (108.6 by 86.4 cm), and the painting's dimensions are 34.75 by 25.75 inches. The condition is also exceptional. The painting is flat, the colors are vibrant, and there are no visible signs of foxing or other damage. While the work resides in a period frame, it appears to have been recently been removed and reframed, as craft-colored paper covers the rear of the painting underneath the outer frame. Also included is a modern brass lamp in fine working order which is affixed to the rear. This item resides with our client on the Upper East Side of Manhattan ( New York City ) and may be seen by appointment. ( hantiques )
