ANtique Miniature Traveling Religious Icon Shrine with hinged doors

Unavailable

In victorian times when space was indeed limited, people carried many miniature items. This would have been a travelling shrine that would have been placed on a mantle when one landed in one's destination. Triptych is a work consisting of three painted or carved panels that are hinged together. ALthough not painted, this miniature traveling shrine which is marked GESCH is a trifold metal shrine. The ges.gesch marking began in the late 1800s. I think this is early 1900's. Intricate metal work on the front with the darker brass doors that open make this look like a grand old cathedral. When the doors open there is a black material background with Madonna and child in the center. I don't see any pixels so I am not sure what she is made of. This is 2 1/4" long x 1 1/3" wide ( see photo with ruler). THe front is in very good condition and the back has some wear to the metal . I can only imagine how far this wonderful old religious icon has traveled and all the stories it could tell. VintageSparkles offers Layaway on all our pieces regardless of which site it comes from.
