Charles Suan (French, 19th c.) La Frayeur French Bronze Sculpture

This large patinated bronze sculpture titled La Frayeur (The Fright), by Charles Georges Ferville Suan (1833-1891), measures an impressive 37.5" by 21" by 14.5". It depicts a bare-footed young man, partially draped in fur skin, with one hand wielding a club in defense of a coiled snake. This work is believed to date from the period of the artist or shortly thereafter. It is extremely heavy and we have not inspected nor photographed the underside. It is signed in the cast and there are no visible foundry marks.

According to the Benezit was born in Saumur in the Loire regiona, c. 1810-1815 and died in Paris c. 1879-1892.  He studied under Picot and made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1836.  He later settled in Le Mans.  His work was featured in the Painters and the Sarthe Region (Les Peintres et la Sarthe) exhibition  at the Musee de al Reine Berengere in  and lEpau Abby (Abbey of Epau) in Le Mans in 2001.
