This fabulous pitcher is classed as victorian imari or gaudy Welsh although not Welsh but made in the potteries of Staffordshire, England in the mid to late Victorian era. The pitcher or hot water jug is 7 inches high with a hammered copper lid and was made by Samuel Johnson Britannia Pottery, Staffordshire England around 1870-1890s. The imari color jug has cobalt blue medallions and trim and a sampler of intricate gold patterns above the half reeded bottom of the jug and gold trim. The pitcher or jug has a hammered copper lid that fits into a slot/hole either side of the top with pins. The jug is in very good ++ condition except for a cobalt glaze run underglaze done at the time of manufacture and some gold loss from use. Imari was popularized by the victorian craze for Japanese colors and designs at the time.
