Antique Hungarian Orientalist Ottoman Painting

Unavailable
This antique Orientalist oil painting on canvas depicts a dramatic battle scene with soldiers on horseback and foot. It appears to depict a cavalry battle between sword-wielding Ottoman Turks and blue jacketed swordsmen and helmeted infantry possibly from Russia (during the Crimean War), or one of the other eastern European nations with which the empire fought during the nineteenth century (such as Bulgaria, Bosnia, Montenegro, Serbia or Greece). Stretcher measures 42.5" by 29.25" by 0.75". Giltwood and gesso frame is likely original to the painting and measures 48" by 35.5" by 3". We have found no signature. Stretcher carries the stamped hallmark for the Iparmuveszeti Muzeum (the Museum of Applied Arts) in Budapest Hungary, indicating the piece was authenticated and approved for export in accordance with Hungarian law, and suggesting the piece may have been painted by a Hungarian artist. Canvas was relined many years ago, prior to export from Hungary. This painting likely dates from the late nineteenth century. There are gesso losses at each corner and in other spots, and our images below are representative of the losses throughout.
