Condition
Condition:
VERY GOOD
In overall very good condition. Antique and vintage items by their very nature show normal wear to finish and miscellaneous scratches, nicks, and dings due to age and use. As we define 'very good condition' relative to the stated age of the piece, we would expect to see 'character marks' consistent with that age and could include minor nicks or dings on a piece of furniture, normal separation at joints in wood due to expansion and contraction over time, all locks functioning, and all drawers and doors open or slide easily. If there has been a break in the marble, it has been so expertly repaired that it is difficult to tell. If some of the original trim has been replaced or minor restoration has been performed, it has been so expertly done that it is difficult to tell. Upholstered items may show wear consistent with age and use. EuroLux Antiques makes no representation regarding the comfort of chairs or useability for the customer's particular application.
Item Specifics:
Minor damage to interior drawer and miscellaneous wear due to age and use. A piece on interior bottom is missing. Original lock no longer functions, but door operates normally.

BRITTANY STYLE
Brittany, also called Bretagne, is a French province that is geographically located at the northwestern corner of France. However, Brittany was once an independent kingdom and is still considered to be one of the six Celtic nations in the world today. The celtic language, Breton, is still spoken and many Celtic traditions still survive. Celtic art, which influenced the design of Brittany furniture, is ornate, usually avoids straight lines, and is often symbolic.
In 1839, a collection of popular Breton songs was collected by Theodore Hersart de la Villemarque and published as the Barzaz Breiz (The Ballads of Brittany). It was compiled from oral tradition and preserves traditional folk tales, legends and music. This collection created a new-found interest in the local Celtic heritage of the Brittany region and spawned a great demand for Brittany style furniture throughout France. Hallmarks of the style include very ornate carvings, often using circles and ship's wheels as a nod to the importance of the sea to the local economy, and the symbolic use of men and women in traditional costume to represent piety, a strong work ethic, and the enjoyment of life. Brittany style was seen as rustic or primitive and referred back to the romantic notion of a simpler time of days long gone. Most pieces of Brittany style furniture are made from chestnut and are darkly stained.
While the hand-painted production of faience pottery has been in existence in the city of
Quimper in the Brittany region since 1708, the style that is synonymous with the name Quimper features a Breton man and woman in traditional costume and was developed around 1870 in response to the craze for Brittany style furniture and decorative arts.
