The Crest of the Family of Fellowes

The crest as engraved upon this Victorian English Sterling Silver Coffee Pot by Andrew Crespel and Thomas Parker hallmarked London 1865 is that of the family of Fellowes. It may be blazoned as follows:

Crest: A lion's head erased or morally crowned argent charged with a fess dancetty ermine

The family of Fellowes who bore this crest stemmed from William Fellowes, of London who lived in the early to mid-17th Century. He married Ann Worfield, daughter of Thomas Worfield, of Leigh in the County of Worcestershire. One of William's grandsons, Sir John Fellowes, of Carshalton House, of Carshalton in the County of Surrey was created a Baronet on the 20th January 1719. Sir John was born in 1670, served as the Sub Governor of the South Sea Company. He died unmarried on the 26th July 1724 at Carshalton when his baronetcy fell into extinction. Further descendants of William and Ann Fellowes settled at Eggesford in the County of Devon and at Shotesham Park in the County of Norfolk. Coulson Fellowes, the eldest son of the Eggesford branch of the family was the ancestor the Fellowes, Barons De Ramsey (created in the Peerage of the United Kingdom) on the 5th July 1887; whilst the Ailwyn Edward Fellowes (the 2nd son of Edward Ramsey, the 1st Baron De Ramsey) was created Baron Ailwyn (in the Peerage of the United Kingdom) in 1921. Undoubtedly, this particular coffee pot was in the possession of a member of the Fellowes family shortly after its manufacture or was purchased or inherited at a later date and engraved with their crest.
