English Antique Smoker's Cabinet

Dated: 1887!

With exquisite figural burl veneer, inside and out! Fitted interior includes 3 drawers with intricately detailed brass pulls. The bottom drawer extends across the width of the cabinet and has a divider. Three grooves allows you to adjust the size of the space to accommodate cigars as well as cigarettes. Two smaller additional drawers could hold cigarettes, or be used for storage. Each drawer also has a matching burl veneer on the outside, as well as on the top inside edge at the front of each drawer. A pipe rack, fitted to hold 4 pipes, pulls forward for easy access. There is a brass cigar cutter mounted inside the cabinet, and a space for a tobacco jar. One of the doors is fitted on the inside with a brass match holder, beneath which is a locking mechanism that extends down to secure the cabinet doors. On the outside of the 2 doors, there are 2 matching brass plaques that could be used for engraving. In the center of each door panel is a brass shield. The shield on the right side has a hidden locking mechanism that is revealed by sliding the center portion of the shield to the side. The original working key is still with this cabinet after 126 years! The words "SECURE LEVER" are engraved into the front of each shield. Each door is secured with brass hinges that extend down the full legnth of the doors. On the outside of each door, at the inner edge, are 2 brass pulls.

There are 2 Registry numbers. One is engraved into the locking mechanism: RD56159 (1886). The other one is stamped into the veneer in the center of the base at the front (just under where the doors close): RD76871 (1887).

This is one of the most beautiful burl wood veneers that I have ever seen! I do not know what type of tree it is from, so I am referring to it as a figural burl. It is exquisite!
