Antique English Silver & Ivory Fish Flatware Set

Unavailable
This fabulous twenty-four piece sterling silver fish service in the Chinoiserie style features carved ivory handles with enamel insect and bird designs. It was made by Goldsmiths Alliance Ltd. of London, circa 1880-1890. Pieces carry the lion passant and leopard marks to indicate sterling silver purity and the city of London. Other marks include the duty mark depicting Queen Victoria I (1838-1890), and letter F for the year, and the maker's mark FH which may represent the mark of Francis Higgins, a London maker who began operation in 1868. It's possible the blades were created by Higgins, while the set was finished and marketed by Goldsmiths Alliance Ltd. The latter firm was established in 1751 as Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Alliance Ltd., and changed its name in 1880. It is said to have achieved a royal appointment from the queen and had a large shop on Regent Street. It is said to have exhibited at numerous exhibitions, including the Fisheries Exhibition in 1883, the Inventions Exhibition in 1885, the Indian and Colonial Exhibition in 1886, the International Expositions of Paris in 1889, Chicago in 1893, California in 1894, and Paris in 1900 where it won the Grand Prix.
