Antique Dining Table C1880 12ft Mahogany Dining Table

An extremely rare opportunity to own an English Antique Victorian oval mahogany dining room table, circa 1880 in date.

I purchased this from a beautiful house in Highgate, London and they bought it in 1996 from a local antique shop, at great expense.

This table seats twelve diners in comfort and would also be ideal for use as a conference table.

It is in solid mahogany with three original leaves that can be added as required by the wind out mechanism. The mahogany is a beautiful colour, achieved by many years of sunlight, and the grain has wonderful flame markings, typical of the best quality flame mahogany which was used in the very best quality Victorian dining tables.

It stands on its original brass and porcelain castors

The chairs shown in the photographs are not included but can be purchased if required.

75 cm H x 362 cm W x 112 cm D when fully extended


75 cm H x 182 cm W x 112 cm D when completely closed

Condition:

In excellent fully restored condition.

Thomas Sheraton-18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.
