Extraordinary color engraving depicting Roman poet Virgil writing his epitaph after the painting by the same name by Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807) a Swiss-Austrian Neoclassical painter, engraved by Thomas Burke (1749-1815) an Irish engraver and published by Thomas Macklin (1752/3-1800), a 18th-century British printseller and picture dealer. Text on the page reads as follows: Virgil Writing his Epitaph Angelica Kauffman pinxt Burke Sculp. Mantua gave me birth, Calabria saw me die My ashes rest in Naples, I sung of Shepherds, Fields and Heroes. Mantua me genuit , Calabri rapuere Tenet nunc Parthenope , Cecini Pascua, Rura, Duces. From the original picture in the collection of John Bowles Esqr. to whom this plate is incribed your most humble serv. Thomas Macklin. LONDON Published Jany. 20th 1794 by Thos. Macklin, Poets Gallery, Fleet Street. In very good used condition with toning and minor imperfections as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
