Antique Chinese Ming Dynasty Square Table

Unavailable
A Chinese antique table treasure! Late Ming Dynasty (400 years old) square table with delicately carved stretchers on all four sides. Burled root wood center has become distressed over the years and now has a cracked leather finish--very attractive. The legs end in classic carved scroll feet.

One of my favorite pieces, it has lovely proportions and workmanship. I found it covered in dust, in one of my favorite Beijing vendor's warehouse. He pointed it out to me and suggested that I should take it. It didn't look like much in the dim light, covered with a thick layer of dust. I doubted how old my vendor said it was, but it was freezing cold in the unheated warehouse on that December day, so I quickly accepted his suggestion and moved on to select additional pieces.

It was only when we received the table in New Orleans and cleaned it up, that I realized what an exceptional table it is. Later, our local Asian antiques appraiser confirmed the age for us. Originally finished in black lacquer, the wonderful grain of the purple elm wood peeks through. The top has aged into a stunning crackled patina.
