Authentic antique 19th century Russian Cossack sword 'Shashka'. DETAILS: A slightly curved single edged steel blade cut with fullers. A hilt made of brown bone grips-scales with a hooked bifurcated pommel decorated with nielloed silver crescents and retained by rivets. CONDITION: A small crack in one of the horn scales near the second rivet and some pitting to the blade.
This type of Shashka was the favourite sword of the Kuban and Don Cossacks and was also very popular among people of the Caucasus. On the base of this sword was designed the Government Issue 1904 Pattern trooper's KUBAN COSSACK Shashka and mass produced by the Zlatoust Arms Factory, except that this is an older 19th century version of the Kuban Cossack sword.
