Antique 19th century Turkish Ottoman Balkan silver belt for a Yatagan sword. Details: This exceptional example of an Ottoman belt is made from 62 individual elements (including the buckle) and is made of solid coin silver. Each element was cast in a rigid mould, hammered, and decorated in the characteristic Balkan knobbed design and adorned in nielloe. The large clasp in the form of a shield is decorated en-suite with a knobbed design of foliate. A similar knobbed style of silver decoration can be seen on Ottoman Balkan Yattagan swords, Gun pouches, daggers and flintlock pistols.
This type of metal belt was one of the characteristic attributes of Ottoman Balkan nobilities and of the high rank military class during the period of the 18th-19th century.
MEASUREMENTS: Overall length: 87.8 cm (34 1/2 in). Height of the clasp: 10.8 cm (4 1/4 in). Width of the belt: 4 cm. Weight:670 grams (23.6335 ounces).
CONDITION: In very good condition except that the leather belt is a later replacement.
