Extremely Rare Antique 17th century Hungarian-Polish mace Buzogányok - Buzdygan. DETAILS: A compact bulbous iron head formed with an arrangement of ten robust low flanges, with a baton-shaped pommel, with an integral steel tapering haft of octagonal section, inlaid with brass studs, a separate turned wooden ebony socket, with a spirally shaped grip decorated en suite with the head in brass studs, enclosed by an iron cap and collar.
REFERENCES:1) An almost identical mace is published in the catalog from the exhibition of the Wilanow Palace Museum Warsaw 1996 Throne of Relics in Honour of His Royal Highness the Invincible Jan III Sobieski, King of Poland on the Three Hundredth Anniversary of His Death 1696-1996. Page: 225 No: 63. Description in Polish: Buzdygan of Hungarian type early 17th century. (2) Another similar mace which belonged to the famous 17th century chief commander of the Polish Army, Stefan Czarnecki, is published in the book:Bron w dawnej Polsce" by Zdzislaw Zygulski. No 148. The buzdygan is a mace bared by a colonel as a symbol of rank, and a sign of the officer's authority, as the commander of the Polish cavalry Husaria and Pancerni during the 16th-17th century. There were many different styles of Buzdygans used by the Polish cavalry commanders, this particular one represents a classical HUNGARIAN style mace.
CONDITION: In good condition considering its age, rusty iron parts, some brass studs in the iron head are missing.
