The history of the great ANSONIA CLOCK COMPANY has its roots in Bristol, Connecticut where it was founded in 1850 shortly before moving a few miles to Ansonia, Connecticut. In April of 1879, the company established a factory in Brooklyn, New York and just one year later, in October of 1880 it was totally destroyed by a fire which was reported to have begun with a gas leakage in the case wood drying room. After rebuilding, the entire manufacturing operation of the company was consolidated into the Brooklyn plant and by 1883, additional offices were established in Chicago and London, England. By the year 1914, the Ansonia Clock Company was producing 450 different models. Hard times fell on the company by the mid 1920's however and in 1926 they sold their five story Brooklyn warehouse to Soviet Russia's AMTORG TRADING CORPORATION with the tools, machinery and rights transfered to Russia. The sudden change of ownership and venue makes the dating of Ansonia clocks somewhat easier than many of the other American manufacturers. This particular beauty was known as the ANSONIA "A" WALL REGULATOR. The lovely Black Walnut case houses a clean well-running eight-day brass movement with a calendar that automatically moves the red hand from day to day. The brass pendulum 'bob' has a few light dings which reflect the room light nicely as it swings back and forth (see photograph). The lower door glass is original and retains the 'A' REGULATOR designation and inside the case is the original beat indicator (see photographs) to determine the correct amplitude of the pendulum swing and also a well-preserved ANSONIA label (see photograph) listing their locations at the time the clock was produced. This is a very nice example of the calendar line that Ansonia manufactured. Except for the recovered dial, it is all original and running well. Add this one to your den or office wall for a handsome look and lots of favorable comments by those who see it.
