Andre Gaillard Sculpture Inspired by Le Passe Muraille

This patinated abstract iron sculpture by Andre Gaillard was inspired by "Le Passe Muraille" (The Man Who Could Walk Through Walls, or The Walker Through Walls), the short story fantasy written in 1943 by the important French novelist and playwright, Marcel Aymé (1902-1967). In his most famous of short stories, Le Passe Muraille tells the story of Dutilleul, a man of 42 years who discovers the amazing ability to walk through walls. His novel ability initially brings him great pleasure, but ultimately leads him toward sinister behavior. It dates from circa 1970 and measures 23" tall, 28.5" wide and 9" deep (58.4 x 72.4 x 22.9 cm). Its estimated weight is 25 lbs. (11.3 kg). A 2.5 meter tall bronze sculpture with the same theme was created by Gaillard in 1971 and resides on la Cité Scientifique campus, Université des Sciences et Technologies de Lille (University of Sciences and Technology) in Lille.
