An unusual 1862 Confederate will dividing slaves among children and emancipating one child. Two documents - The last will and testament of Joseph Cooper dated August 12, 1862 attached to the Hinds County Mississippi Probate court document filed June 6, 1864 "given to my son T. J. Cooper the following slaves- Edmond Sam and Mose I have also heretofore given unto my son Jas. N. Cooper the following slaves Baltimore Alvin Frances and Jack I have also given to my little grand daughter Pattie- A slave girl named Margaret I will that the balance of my boy negroes be equally divided between my sons the slave Eliza I will to live with whichever of my children or their heirs she decides to stay taking him at his valuation- Old Maria I wish to live whichever of my children or their heirs she desires to. Mary the daughter of Eliza and her child Hennie I will to be liberated whenever this can be done - if The laws of the State of Confederacy will not permit the emancipation of slaves then I wish she have her own choice as to which one of my children or their heirs she will live with. I also appoint my son Jas N. Cooper agent for Mary and sole executor of this my last will and testament" .Slavery
