This is a nice clean, vintage WWII era folding entrenching shovel, marked "US AMES 1944". We do believe that 1944 was the year of manufacture of this shovel, as many companies that didn't make military use items had changed over the production line to meet the needs of the war effort in that year. Ames Tools generally made shovels, picks and other earth working tools before WWII. We have some commemorative belt buckle that mark their manufacturing of tools that build America also. This shovel is 20.5" long folded and 28" long fully extended. The shovel end is 6" wide x 8.5" long on the blade only. It was originally all painted Army green, even on the wood handle. About 90% of the paint is still intact overall. The shovel pivot is very heavy duty, and lock in both positions with a threaded nut that pushes against the pivot arms, an works great. No damage, no rust, very clean, very little wear, very well made!
