Raised in a family of artisans, Albert Insley began his studies an architect and trained in his father’s photography studio at age fourteen. In 1860, at age 18, Insley made his first of many painting trips to the Green and White Mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire and to the Shawangunk Mountains of New York which had great influence on his budding artistic talent. When only twenty-five, Insley began exhibiting on a regular basis at the National Academy of Design in New York City until 1898 – at times with the well-known Jasper Cropsey. A pupil of Jasper Francis Cropsey and George Inness, Insley’s paintings reflect the most picturesque features of the artistic currents of the time. His popularity came at a time when the Hudson River School and related art colonies were challenged by the changing times and the Civil War’s impact on tonalistic art. This piece has the depth you would expect from artists of this era. It also delivers wonderful color and dramatic impact of the threatening sky to the upper left. This painting is a great overall presentation housed in what appears to be its original frame. Under black light we have noticed a very small amount of in painting to the sky which is not uncommon. It has been professionally (very lightly) cleaned and inspected. The long-lived artist died in Nyack, New York in 1937 at age 95. Member: Boston Arts Club, Brooklyn Art Association, Nanuet Painters and Sculptors Guild, National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Salmagundi Club. The overall size measures 26 1/2 wide by 19 1/2 wide . Sight size measures 19 1/4 by 12 inches high.
