8 Chinoiserie Queen Anne Dining Chars

What a find.  Here is a set of Queen Anne style English dining chairs in a Chinoisserie design.  What is fabulous about this set is the fact that each chair has a different hand painted design with figures.  Much of the figures are in a subtlety raised design which gives it much depth and detail.  The set consists of 6 side chairs and 2 armchairs.  The side chairs measure 42.5” tall, 20” wide and 19” deep.  The armchairs measure 47.5” tall, 24” wide and 21.5” deep.  The chairs are tall and beautifully shaped and proportional.  The shapely arched backs have a center vase shaped splat.  The ebonized or lacquered frames are embellished with 10 different exterior scenes.  Each has a male or female figure in full length Asian dress.  Smaller figures are also on the back stiles.  In addition, there are many creatures and insects such as birds, butterflies, dragonflies, bats, etc.  In the background are pagodas, flowers, trees, mountains, streams, etc.  Notice how the décor extends along all sides of the seat rail and the front legs.  The shapely seats are covered in black leather looking fabric.  These chairs have substantial weight.  The serpentine shaped legs end in a pad, Queen Anne style foot.  There are 2 corner blocks missing, one each on 2 different chairs.  They are located in the rear, where the back leg and the seat come together.  This does not affect their integrity or use and is only noticeable upon close inspection.  All the chairs are tight and in excellent condition.  There are only some minor rubs and paint loss which is surprising given their age.  What a beautiful and sophisticated set of chairs that would go with almost any style of dining table – both formal and informal.
