2005/1011 Salem County New Jersey Mantel c.1800-1815
Unavailable
A fine New Jersey early neoclassic fireplace mantelpiece. The shelf has three projections which agree with applied tablets to the frieze. The central has an oval paterae with reeded interior. The end tablets are finely moulded and form capitals applied to the mantel jambs or legs. The frieze is also crossed with two belt courses, the upper one with reeded dentilation. The pilasters retain two original brass buttons which were used for tolls or thonged turkey wings to clean the hearth. The mantel pilasters are footed on applied plinths and the mantel hearth opening has stepped trim section. The mantel has been hand cleaned of all old paint buildup, woodwork repairs have been made as necessary and a rich hand rubbed patina finish applied. Should you wish to paint the mantel, use a soft cloth with turpentine to remove any wax from the surface of the mantel prior to painting. NOTE: This mantle should be installed by your mechanic in accordance with all local fire and building codes. (#1688)
