2004/990 Rhode Island Mantel c.1800-1820

Unavailable
A fine and most rare neoclassic pine fireplace mantelpiece retaining its original carved mahogany paterae as well as inlaid mirror returns. The mantel shelf has 3 projected sections agreeing with stylized tablets applied to the frieze. A course of reeded dentillation and various moldings support the shelf and a molded band course supports the 3 tablets below. The mantel jambs or legs are mounted with reeded pilasters topped with oval paterae mahogany inlaid capitals and footed on molded plinths. The mantel is hand finished in an ocre surface to approximate the original, now gone. The constrast between the mahogany and the ocre is quite rare in American fireplace mantelpieces. The mantel has been hand cleaned of all old paint buildup, woodwork repairs have been made as necessary and a rich hand rubbed patina finish applied. Should you wish to paint the mantel, use a soft cloth with turpentine to remove any wax from the surface of the mantel prior to painting. NOTE: This mantle should be installed by your mechanic in accordance with all local fire and building codes. (#1580)
