2000/893 Portsmouth, New Hampshire Neoclassic Mantel c.1800
Unavailable
To a pine fireplace mantelpice reported to have been removed years ago from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This example has a repeated diamond motif applied across the whole of the frieze. Above is a block shelf mounted with fine moldings, some of which are recalled from the Queen Anne period. The mantel jambs or legs are mounted with a richly molded section which also crosses the frieze and forms a picture frame opening. This example reflects the rich architectural background of the area, and the diamonds liken the effect. Note: this mantel is presently framed with modern support members which should be removed before fixing it to the wall, This type of construction is found also in English mantelpieces, where the mantels once fixed do not need framing. The mantel has been hand cleaned of all old paint buildup, woodwork repairs have been made as necessary and a rich hand rubbed patina finish applied. Should you wish to paint the mantel, use a soft cloth with turpentine to remove any wax from the surface of the mantel prior to painting.
This mantel should be installed by your mechanic in accordance with all local fire and building codes.
