2 LBS OLD VINTAGE "CHRISTMAS" "LOVE" TRADE BEADS 1920-50 #3DD
Just found that the beads we have are also referred to as "Christmas" in the U.S. or "Love" beads in West Africa. Here is a rare find from a hoard of old (unused) Bohemian beads made in Czechoslovakia sometime between 1920-50's and exported to Africa. Same type of beads (Item # 4926816349) described as "African Christmas Trade beads" sold on Ebay for $31.00. This lot had 6 strands in total length of 204 inches. Our 2 pound lot, if strung, would measure 3970 inches, which is 20 times more and would equal to $620 value, based on the winning bid. The really interesting thing about most of these beads is that unlike the modern Czech beads, these beads are shaped more like old Italian seed beads, being more "donut" shaped instead of "barrel" shaped. This means that the diameter is larger than the thickness, and some of the beads are much like little "ring" donuts. This shape makes old style "overlay" and "lane stich" (lazy stich) beadwork look much better. Replicas made using these old beads as the background just look more authentic! They are also slightly irregular like the old Italian beads. Weight of this lot is 2 pounds. Size range is from #7 to smallest #20 in full scale of colors - transparent, opaque and striped beads. To show better detail, pictured is (washed) randomly picked and strung assortment, which is 58 inches long, contains 900 beads and weighs 13.2 grams. To save you some time, here are some figures (based on the pictured assortment) what is, or what can you do with 2 pounds : Approximately 61910 beads, if strung with no spacers the length would be 3970 inches, a strand 332 feet long!!!! The beads accumulated some dust over the years and will need a wash. If you ever wanted to duplicate an old Native American or African artifact but lacked the proper beads then these are perfect for you. If you need to see larger, more detailed photo, please email us.
