This is a fine example of 19th century Spanish design. The foiled garnets are set in silver, while the highly detailed scroll-work is in silver gilt. (The Victoria and Albert Museum has a larger piece very similar to this in both design and execution.) The garnets are faceted, but with a broad table related to table cut diamonds of the period. Both garnets and pearls are in closed back settings. This piece has what appear to be original hooks for use as a pendant. The pin and clasp were added sometime later in the 19th century.
