1998/842 Birdsboro, Penn. Gouge Carved Mantel c.1790-1810

Unavailable
To a rare folk art white pine fireplace mantelpiece of the c.1790-1810 period. This mantel was reported to have been removed from a farm house in the Birdsboro, Pennsylvania area. The mantel shelf has three projected surfaces which agree with gouge carved neoclassic tablets which are applied to the frieze. Above the frieze is a course of "snowflake and flutes". The tablets are footed on a belt course which also forms capitals for applied fluted pilasters which are mounted to the legs or jambs. The pilasters are above projected plinth blocks. The mantel has been hand cleaned of all old paint buildup, woodwork repairs have been made as necessary and a rich hand rubbed patina finish applied. Should you wish to paint the mantel, use a soft cloth with turpentine to remove any wax from the surface of the mantel prior to painting.
This mantle should be installed by your mechanic in accordance with all local fire and building codes
