1994/699 Coastal Massachusetts Mantel c.1790-1810

Unavailable
To a fine and rare coastal Massachusetts fireplace mantelpiece of the c.1790-1810 period. This example has been reported to have been removed many years ago form a mansion in Newburyport, MA. The mantel is neoclassic in feeling. The various paneled members are trimmed with a poplar running rope moulding. The panels are also filled with horizontal and vertical reeding. The center tablet is incised with a fan device centered by another fan and button. The deep straight shelf has a moulded front edge and below are belt courses of early federal trim sections. The mantel has good projection as it was applied to a projected chimney breast but now has been packed out to accommodate a flat wall. Most interesting to note are the returns on the mantel jambs or legs as they match the front pilasters.
