To a Johnstown, New York c.1790-1810 fireplace mantelpiece with moulded shelf supported by cove section moulding. The plain frieze is crossed with a belt course which is continued to the exterior of the jambs or legs. The mantel retains the original first coat of paint which has never been covered. (This mantel is part of a room with windows and door casing, closet doors and base board which is included. (We have another mantel from the same house. See 92/678). It is most unusual to find architectural enrichments in their original paint with no over paint. As mantels especially were subject to staining from the firebox. NOTE: This mantel should be installed by your mechanic in accordance with all local fire and building codes.
