This durable, high quality bone china plate was produced by the Copeland Company Stoke-On-Trent, England. Copeland was a former associate of Josiah Spode, who perfected the process of blue underglaze printing on white earthenware, which revolutionized the pottery industry.
The original design"Tower" pattern ca.1814, was derived from the printed illustration in Merigot's," Views of Rome and its Vicinity", published in about 1796. Tower depicts the Bridge of Salaro near Porta Salara, Rome.
This scalloped edged saucer plate, features a pie crust border. It was produced in the mid 20th century, I'm thinking. The color is the deep and rich of cobalt. The floral border, which characterizes Staffordshire pottery surrounds the central tower decoration.
The plate is in excellent condition. It does slight have crazing, but no discoloration (please see pictures). The blue oval Copeland stamp is present.
It is a favorite in interior design, and beloved by millions. This particular design is outstanding, when it comes to blue and white china. Fill your china or curio cabinet with it, and you will appreciate the absolute beauty that has made it so popular for almost 200 years.
