This stunning antique French buffet is from the period of Louis XV and is constructed of solid walnut wood. During a portion of Louis XV’s reign, the export of walnut wood was prohibited due to its beauty.
The buffet has a conforming rectangular top over two doors. The frieze has two asymmetrical, finely carved molded panels. The moldings outline a single scrolling floral and foliate stem bearing the fleur de lis stamen. It appears as an outgrowth from the lower, two small c-scrolls. The doors have asymmetrically carved scrolling moldings ending with an outgrowth of gadrooned leaves. Note the hand carved motifs are ever so slightly different from each other from one door to the other. There is a shaped, raised panel at the center of each door. The apron has a shaped base with a central motif of scrolling gadrooned leaves and the rounded corners have panels encasing floral and foliate motifs. The bottom of the corner panels has repeated beading over the knees of the buffet. The front feet are scrolled while the back feet are gently shaped blocks. The sides have panels en chapeau with a raised open field center panel . The apron on either side is shaped.
The rare, elegant, period Louis XV walnut wood buffet from Provence will highlight any collection.
