18th Century Oak Tabernacle from France
This antique French tabernacle has been hand carved from European Oak in the 1700’s. Tabernacles were receptacles reserved for the Eucharist (wine and bread commemorating the life and blood of Christ). Tabernacles generally would have been located at the altar in a church or used in a private chapel.
The crown molding features a stepped in en chapeau or center arch flanked by shaped indents. The upper opening is framed by hand carved wooden tied back drapery motifs. Other motifs are cherubs to either side, with elongated bellflowers ending in volutes. There is a chalice, the cross, and stylized rays of sun are on the bottom center panel surrounded by more volutes with bellflower motifs to either side. This rare antique French tabernacle will be an asset to any home.
Condition: Old restorations, minor losses of motifs, minor rubs and nicks to wood, no key.
