Originally, firebacks were used in fireplaces to radiate heat into the room. Now, in addition to use in fireplaces, they can also be used as ornamentation on stone walls, above stoves, or as an accessory.
This particular fireback depicts a coat of arms with three fleur-de-lis, the Coat of Arms of France. The ornamentation has masks, shells, acanthus leaves, facing volutes, rocaille motif, scrolling foliage and more.
The iron workers initials or possibly the foundry name is stamped "I R" or "L R" at the bottom left. CONDITION: There is some loss of detail, as expected for its age. 18th Century
