18th Century Carved Wooden Statue from France
St. John The Baptist
This antique French hand carved wooden statue depicts St. John the Baptist with a lamb at his feet. The lamb is a symbol of the sacrificial Christ. Beautifully sculpted, the artist has brought much expression and movement to this statue. It was probably once polychromed as seen in some of the creases and on the base upon which he stands. His outstretched arm would have held a staff and possibly a tablet would have been in his right hand to his front. He is draped with a robe tied at his shoulder. The back has been left flat as this statue would have been placed in a niche.
Religious statues are highly prized and collected worldwide.
