1879 Box Hill London Stagecoach Oil Painting
- Item Not Available
This fantastic framed, oil painting on board, is fresh from estate sale and believed to date from 1879. Signed "W HAKEN". It depicts two elegant horse carriages (coaches), apparently speeding back to London from Box Hill, a suburb of old London that as far back as the 18th century was known as a playground for the rich. Carriage is marked "Box Hill...London", and a mile marker on the far right indicates "LONDON...SIX MILES". Painter likely came from Barnsbury, for beside the Haken name is the word "BARNSBURY" and beside it a date that appears to read "1879". (Barnsbury is a place in London, England in the London Borough of Islington. The name is a corruption of Bernersbury, being so called after the Berners family, who gained ownership of the lands after the Norman Conquest.)
Additional images forwarded upon request.
This is a whimsical, bright and lively painting that's well composed and in good condition. Board is slightly warped, and the painting resides in a period frame (with glass) that may be its original. One "L" bracket missing from rear that can easily be replaced.
Dimensions: frame, 21 3/4" by 33 1/2".
