1878 Paris Exposition Sevres Exhibition Centerpiece

This porcelain tazza or coupe by Sevres was designed for the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1878 as an award in the field of agriculture. This design was produced in limited quantities for a short time following the exposition, and this particular one was produced in 1880 as indicated by the " S80 " mark on the underside. It measures 14.5" across and 10" high and weighs an estimated 7-10 lbs. It is in excellent condition, with no visible damages or repairs. It features extensive hand-painted and gilded decoration throughout. The interior features a rinceau motif with a pate-sur-pate cameo medallion depicting the portrait of Cybele, goddess of nature and fertility. The side features a ribbon and vine motif containing fruits and vegetables plus four animal head medallions. Only a few such coupes from this exposition have been offered at major auction in the past ten years. The highest known auction price achieved is 14,400 BP ($20,488 based on the exchange rate 2/1/09) for lot 587 sold by Sotheby's in London on 10/31/06.
