At first I just thought this was a coin that had been carved out, until I did a little investigating. What a scandalous history she has! A die sinker was commissioned to make dies, on which a female figure presents a wreath of victory. Sometimes it was referred to the ROthschild Love Thalers because it was said the female figure was actually the mistress of a banker. Many disputes arose from this and it was neither confirmed or denied because the artist took a tumble off a scaffold and could give his true interpertation of it. This coin never had a wreath around the edge as this one that has become a brooch, has. Another oddity was that coins were often called love tokens and were given to one's sweetheart. A possibility remains that the gentleman who gave this either had a mistress with a sense of humor or a very unsuspecting wife. THere are so many oddities about this mid 1800's solid silver brooch. This brooch measures 1 1/2" and when it was whole was only one of 207,000 made.
