Description:

1841 Colonial Cuba Silver Coin Countermarked Counterstamped on OVER Host coin 1820 Spain Spanish 2 Reales Silver Coin

Lattice grill type countermark for use in Cuba when Cuba was a Spanish Colonial Territory.

Most Spanish Silver Reales coinage circulated in the Americas, including the United Staes, well after the Revolutionary War, as there was a shortage of circulating money, specie, in the US, and Spanish silver coins have been trusted as money in the US going back to Colonial times in the 1600's.

FYI, the First Mint in the Americas was a Spanish Mint in Mexico City.

Our US Dollar is derived from the Spanish 8 Reales, Spanish Milled Silver Dollar.  Our expression 2 Bits for a US Quarter Dollar is from 2/8 or 1/4 of a Spanish 8 Reales Milled Silver Dollar.
